Starting a Business Checklist
- Choose your business name
- Apply for fictitious business name
- See if your business name is available for use as an Internet domain name
- Register the domain name, even if you are not ready to use it yet
- File Partnership, Corporate or LLC papers.
- Contact the IRS for a Federal Identification Number and tax schedule.
- Apply for a State Employee Identification Number and Tax schedule.
- Find out about Worker's Compensation Insurance if you will have employees.
- Apply for Sales Tax Number if needed.
- File State Tax forms.
- Check to get any required Business license or Permits.
- Register Federal Trademarks if necessary.
- Register for Copyrights.
- Apply for patent if you will be marketing an invention.
- Have business phone or extra residential lines installed
- Get liability insurance and other insurances that apply to your specific business.
- Open a bank account and remember to take a copy of your "Fictitious Business Name" with you.
